A Rune Reading: Constraint, Necessity, Pain

Last week I was in an accident and I broke my right arm. I was riding my bicycle when a car turned in front of me and I couldn't stop in time. I was able to slow down enough to turn my front wheel to the left and brace myself for the imminent crash with my right arm. I was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a fairly clean break to my right forearm.

In the time that has passed since my release from the hospital, I have been doing a lot of thinking about what this experience has to teach me. There are many lessons to be learned here. The one that I will focus on this week is the necessity of suffering. The original meaning of suffering was "to undergo". In this case, I am undergoing a period of self-transformation. In order to be transformed I must go through it, the "constraint and pain" . This obstacle cannot be stepped around or avoided. As this is my first time experiencing a broken bone, and no less my dominate right arm, I am learning how to be patient with myself, how to ask for help and receive with grace. I am lucky enough to have an amazing network of people; family and friends who are more than willing to help me through this journey.

I was sitting to meditate yesterday and decided to end with a Rune reading, unseen my hand chose the Rune "Nauthiz" which means: constraint, necessity and pain. Ha! The Universe speaks and it is up to me to listen. I will share with you the wisdom of Nauthiz, from "The Book of Runes" below:

"A cleansing is required here; in undertaking it you fund a will and strengthen character. Begin with what is most difficult and proceed to what is easy. -- Thus you are required to undergo the dark side of your passage. To control your anger, to restrain your instincts, to keep your faith firm -- all this is at issue here. Modesty an good temper are the essential blessings at such a time.

As part of the Cycle of Self-Transformation, Nauthiz is the great teacher disguised as the bringer of pain and limitation. It has been said that only at the point of greatest darkness do we become aware of the Light within us by which we come to recognize the true creative power of the Self.

When you are able to look upon this Rune with a smile, you will recognize the troubles, denials and setbacks of life as your guides, teachers and developers. Try not to take this world personally, this Rune as saying, work with the shadow, examine what inside you magnetizes misfortune into your life."
